Summer Fun in South Surrey

Summer brings sunny days and warm evenings, making it the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities and family fun in South Surrey and White Rock. SALAS Collective Care

Staying Safe in the Summer Sun

Protect Your Skin

  1. Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  2. Wear Protective Clothing: Light, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses can help protect you from harmful UV rays.
  3. Seek Shade: Especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), try to stay in shaded areas to avoid direct sun exposure.

Stay Hydrated

  1. Drink Plenty of Water: Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated, especially when engaging in outdoor activities.
  2. Avoid Sugary Drinks: Sugary and caffeinated beverages can dehydrate you. Instead, opt for water, herbal teas, or electrolyte-enhanced drinks—the best ones without sugar!
  3. Eat Water-Rich Foods: Include fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges to help maintain hydration levels.

Prevent Injuries

  1. Warm-Up and Stretch: Before engaging in physical activity, stretch to prevent muscle strains and injuries.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Stop the activity and rest if you experience pain or discomfort. Pushing through pain can lead to injuries.

White Rock Summer Events

Summertime in a bowl!

Summer Fun in South Surrey and White Rock definitely includes a yummy sorbet! This vegan, dairy-free sorbet has bright, vibrant flavours and is incredibly easy to make. This strawberry sorbet is especially easy, thanks to the Ninja CREAMi.

Ninja CREAMi Strawberry Sorbet

This Ninja CREAMi strawberry sorbet bursts with vibrant flavour and colour. It’s not just dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, oil-free, and low-fat, but also a delicious treat that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh sliced/roughly chopped strawberries
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tbsp white chia seeds see NOTE
  • 1/4 cup orange juice or 2 tbsp water and 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 – 1 tbsp pure maple syrup optional; see note
  • optional: 1/4 tsp vanilla bean powder
  • pinch salt optional
  • 1/2 tbsp dragon fruit powder is optional but gorgeous! See note

Instructions

For the strawberries, don’t worry about how much to chop them. Just slice or cut in half to get a rough measure. This recipe is flexible!

In a blender, add just 1 cup of the strawberries, chia seeds (see note, using 1 1/2- 2 tbsp), orange juice or water/maple syrup, and vanilla/salt/dragonfruit powder (if using).

Puree until smooth. Add the remaining strawberries and pulse to roughly chop (keeping some chunky consistency of the strawberries). Alternatively, you can dice by hand and stir into the pureed mixture, keeping some chunky consistency of the berries.

Transfer the mixture to a Ninja CREAMi pint. Place in the freezer and let set overnight. When fully frozen, remove and place in the Ninja CREAMi spin vessel.

Set the function to “sorbet” and let it spin at least twice. Check consistency. If it’s still icy or not softer-set, spin again. Once smooth and spoonable, it’s ready to serve!

Notes

  • Chia Note: I like this sorbet with 1 1/2 – 2 tbsp of chia.
  • Orange Juice Note: If you do not want to add a sweetener like maple syrup or date syrup, try 1/4 cup of fresh orange juice. Depending on the sweetness of the juice and the ripeness of the berries, you may still opt for a touch of maple syrup. Note that a frozen treat will taste less sweet than the room-temperature recipe.
  • Dragon Fruit Powder: I use Wilderness Poets dragon fruit powder. The colour is enchanting! Also, it will add a touch of natural sweetness, so you may not need/want the maple syrup.
